Full sentence outlines

hello today we’ll be talking about how do you take a visa statement you’ve developed check to make certain that it has all of the requisite parts and then develop it step by step into a full sentence outline full sentence outlines are not so necessary when you’re writing short papers that have maybe five paragraphs to them but as you begin to do more research and write more complicated essays it’s important that you be able to rough them out in full sentence outlines so that you don’t have to retain everything in your mind at once and you can focus on your essay just one paragraph at a time so let’s assume that you have an essay thesis that is making maple syrup which comes from the sap of sugar maple trees involves a process that has a number of steps if you’ll remember about point let’s check to make sure it has the two necessary components to make a good thesis statement and so we’ll ask the about point questions first of all what is this sentence about well you can see that it’s about making maple syrup so that’s the topic and then we’ve got to ask the other question which is what’s our point about making maple syrup and you can see from this sentence that making maple syrup in blue involves a process that has a number of steps so it does have a subject or a topic and it does have a point about the subject or the topic and the closet’s between the two which comes from the sap of sugar maple trees is neither the subject nor is it the point it’s just a modifier along the way so it’s okay but it’s there but it would not be okay if that were the thesis statement trying to stand alone so yes we have a complete thesis statement now we can tell by looking at it that it says that the process has a number of steps so if we know that there are 32 steps will have 32 paragraphs within this essay hopefully it doesn’t have 32 steps but you can determine the number of paragraphs the minimum number of paragraphs between your introductory paragraph which concludes your thesis and your concluding paragraph simply by knowing the number of steps or if this were not steps in a process si the number of other components of some sort so okay we’re ready to go in a full sentence outline the sentence that is there your topic sentence for the first paragraph also has to be a complete sentence and in this case ours is first the sap has to be gathered from the trees okay maybe we don’t know a lot about how you gather sap from trees so we will have discovered or already knew a number of steps it takes to gather sap from the trees and in this case we’ve discovered that there are at least four elements that need to be provided in order to explain gathering the SAP a sap from the trees and so our first detail is first you choose healthy trees larger than 30 centimeters in diameter and that’s a complete sentence so our next detail tells us how to drill tap holes at an angle that will allow the SAP to drip down into the bucket that’s a complete sentence and our detail number three is tap the Spile or the drain tube into place that’s a complete sentence actually it’s a complete sentence each of these is a complete sentence because the subject implied is you you choose you drill you tap and then finally you hang the bucket beneath this file so we’re assuming that the writer in this case feels that this is sufficient amount of detail to explain how you actually go about gathering the sap from the trees then having fully explained the first step in this process we move on to the topic sentence for the second step and we see that the sap then has to be transported to the sugarhouse well I don’t know how many how many details one needs to have in explaining transportation to the sugarhouse but in our model here we have three details listed or the possibility of four five six or seven or however many we need in once we’ve fully developed this topic sentence with full sentence descriptions of the details we’re ready to move on to the next step in the process and it appears that the third step in the process at least according to this essay is to boil the SAP so our topic sentence for the paragraph is the sap is boiled now on the surface of it when I first look at this it seems to me okay boil the SAP that seems to be enough to say but then I started thinking further and mentally trying to get the sack well and I developed in my own mind a number of questions so my my fully developed sentences in detail the first one would answer be the answer to the question so how long does it have to boil my answer might be the sap has to boil for three hours I don’t know what the truth is but let’s assume that the SAP has to boil for three hours my next question is at what temperature and the answer to that would be these sentence that would be your next fully developed detail and then I begin to have other questions that I think I’ll need to answer well alright I’m gonna boil it in a certain temperature first for a certain length of time then what has to happen next now I’ve got a VAT full of boiling SAP so the answer to that question what happens next would become my detail 3 and it might be something like you have to let it cool and stand for at least two hours before you can try to move it I don’t know if that’s true again but that’s what you would say so we would have as many details under the topic sentence this sap is boiled as the writer feels is necessary necessary to fully explain that topic sentence and next in this essay that we’re developing the topic sentence for the next paragraph or the next section would be the cured syrup must be bottled and packaged for distribution well if you look at that the topic is the cured syrup and what’s the attitude or the point about it well the point is it has to be bottled and packaged for distribution bottling is one thing packaging is another so I can tell already that there are at least two details needed to fully develop this sentence and in all in this some topic sentence and in all likelihood there may well be more so as we fill in the complete sentences that are details 1 2 & 3 we will be almost finished except that in this particular essay it happens that there are more than four steps there’s actually five and possibly a sixth possibly a seventh and so on so we would have a separate topic sentence for each of those steps in this process however many that may be and then the essay will be finished with the exception of the concluding paragraph and what you do in your concluding paragraph is remind your reader of what you are trying to explain making maple syrup so you’d have a sentence that said says something like in conclusion making maple syrup is a process that involves let’s pick seven steps that would bring us our paragraph or essay to a close with a concluding paragraph and then of course the last thing you have to do is proofread your essay and then you will be done

Can AI write my essay for me?

hey what’s up it’s tricky after I didn’t essay on the book a chronicle of a Death Foretold but I don’t want to do it of course I don’t want to take anything off the internet I wanted to be my own words and luckily in class we’ve been writing reflections on the chapters as we’ve been reading them so what I’m gonna do is take work that I’ve already written feed it into an AI and then have it produce an essay using my style of writing this is of course all the fabrication I haven’t had to write essays on books in years but I do still have those reflections that put in high school and I’m gonna see what kind of help that we get now in order to do this we’re gonna be using Markov chains now let’s look into exactly how those work so let’s look at how a Markov chain works in the context of speech let’s say here we have a comprehensive tree of all the sentences I have said in the last few minutes I like route I like cake I am happy and I am green we can summarize those sentences with this tree I sometimes leads to like and sometimes leads to am like lipstick route and cake and am leads to happy and group now it could be that I’ve said these sentences with different frequencies and you can see that I is more likely to lead to am than to likes what we can then do is summarizes in a table or a matrix where the word on the left represents the word that I just said and the word on the top represents the word I’m going to say next and then the intersection is the likelihood that I go from that first word to that second word it’s not particularly important but somewhat interesting to note that the diagonals are all zeros all that means is that the word is not repeated so I don’t say I followed by another eye or am followed by another end now the Markov chain has no idea about grammar it doesn’t know that there needs to be a subject followed by a verb and then sometimes with an object or indirect object it just knows what word is likely to follow given the word that was just said and because of this a lot of the sentences are going to sound kind of smooth but effectively be utter nonsense so now let’s take a look at the code we’ll start by importing numpy so that we can work with matrices later on and we only have two functions defined here the first one is strip string which just strips a string of a bunch of special characters and then we have this new page function which just prints of untrim so that the terminal output is clean then we’ll scan a text document and store any data in a text document into a variable called text in this case I have a text document which is just full of a bunch of Trump leads then we’re going to execute the strip string function cleaning up that text of all the special characters and then we’re going to separate out that one long string the entire text document into a list of words but in order for the Markov chain algorithm to work we want to have a bunch of unique words so here going to create a list of just the unique words in the text then we’re gonna create a dictionary assigning each of the unique words a number and then in this entire section we’re gonna create that likelihood matrix that we came up with earlier so now we can start crafting a response will do this by cycling through one word after the next until we reach a word that ends in a period a question mark or an exclamation point so the next word needs to be assigned at the start so what does our first word gonna be we’re just going to make it some random word in that unique list then while the response doesn’t end in a period exclamation point or question mark we’re gonna continue adding words to the end of the response and print it out so before jumping into the essay I wanted to test this out on a couple other corpuses of words for example here’s the output when I feed the Markov chain a bunch of speeches from former President Obama it was a strong international consensus to pick the alliance with hold firm to shove their economies so much I’ve stood for the world but we seek a crude stereotype but my country and Europe the center of meaning a bomber assembly line and to say in the enduring faith and that bear is the world we must put an enormous trauma t olympic torch i do it devastates Palestinian aspirations to the pain of us even with dignity to celebrate the events of facing down a successful war without a fight to extend support air ISM be found but it is possible into the things the things must put artisan are the two creatures the need not only upon you its former strength of poverty and other side or personal story of this country but it is a dumb war use the output when I give the Markov chain a bunch of speeches from President Bush you we have studied the spread of their own beat the world in their act is engaged in our lives and released for violating it is to confront the rise of people enter in our friends from a we’ve expedited the liberation they say I congratulate each case with partners Iraq is not one terrorist attacks Marshall said to share of comic problems created gloma deception the regime was right choices be expected at ever before for every illegal immigrants from the issue all nations is a threat they god Bless America from occurring here’s the output when I give the Markov chain input from Romeo and Juliet oh gentle as she bid in t-ball thou your chamber I’ll be 14 that shall be briefed in my heart and yet thy suit Capulet in the inundation of breath is not Romeo would smell as we mean to Romeo I’ll bury love growing for our low is enter nurse play hearts ease and abuse virtue itself turns vice there lies asleep their music with flappers the measures are the Capulets down to cheer here consent and be spread thy food as any law within this case to pleading and delight more I am too late and here’s an output when I give the Markov chain some input from the Old Testament this shall put them onto the land of Egypt the word of his Lord ears devoured him and I am thy brother Jacob hath appeared unto the blind have prevailed and he died by reason of the people behold who wouldn’t need to give thy daughter of Canaan pleased hammer and Isaac a dumb and finally here’s that AI generated si that I’ll be presenting to the class on chronicle of a Death Foretold this statement could used the novel the track to avoid all used as he included just that human nature of life everyone gossips about it was present in it was even being strongly favored by killing Santiago because at the time a major theme in his life is the presence of death and petrol are expected to fend honor is accused of machismo in the opportunity to gossip more significantly however much like they are not randomly chosen his religion our schema and that’s everything that’s the video on how Markov chains can reproduce speech kind of sort of thank you for watching hope you enjoyed the video

How to do an annotated bibliography (MLA 8)

hey everybody the purpose of this video here is to show you exactly what an annotated bibliography is if you are watching this video I just want to remind you that I made this video for my high school honors English class in Indiana so just giving you some context in case I may show you things that are different from your teacher or your professor but just to let you know I do follow MLA format for everything and this annotated bibliography reflects the latest changes in the MLA 8th edition handbook okay so first thing I have to explain to you exactly is what an annotated bibliography is there’s a difference between a bibliography and a works cited bibliography has to do with reading it’s just stuff that you have read a works cited isn’t developed until after you conduct your research and the works cited is the work and the like the work the research the literature everything that you directly cite and source within your paper so bibliography and work cited are two entirely separate things and yes you can have both that you may have at the end of your research paper your works cited that those materials that you directly resourced and referenced within your paper and you may additionally have a bibliography and all that does is it just tells the reader of your work what else you have done to read and research and be more well-rounded even if you have not directly revelant referenced it in your research papers so at the very beginning part like the very first step of doing a research paper making an annotated bibliography is very helpful because it allows you to think critically about your sources I mean how often whenever you are doing a research project and one of the first things that your teacher tells you to do is okay I want you to find me five sources and you’re a little lazy but and the only thing that you do is you find five the first five things that come up on a Google search that match your keywords but you don’t actually look to see if it’s worth it an annotated bibliography forces you to do that so now that I have told you the difference between a bibliography and a works cited let’s break down the annotating if you annotate something that means that you are taking notes so this is a bibliography a list of readings that also has notes on it all it is is a list of citations done in MLA format and underneath each one of them there is a short description of what type of source that it is and how it will be useful for your paper okay this is again helps you to think critically and prove to your instructor that you are using valuable sources so in order to set this up you’re going to have your your document with your page number last name and the page number in the upper right corner have your MLA heading with your name the teacher’s name the name of the class and the date that the work is due and then have your title be annotated bibliography colon and then your topic so this here is just for an imaginary research paper that I would be doing about the influence of Hoosier writers and so I’m just going to go through each one of these step-by-step so you can see for the first one here we have the complete poetical works of James Whitcomb Riley published in Bloomington by Indiana University Press 1993 you can see with the new MLA format we only have periods after authors and titles everything else has commas between it until we get to the end so you can see I have my citation and I have my hanging indent and then there’s a short paragraph after that is not indented okay and here’s the description this source is an anthology of all verse by ryley it contains no academic essays or commentary only the poems themselves they’re in chronological order not by subject matter this resource will be good for studying what Riley wrote at certain times in his life so what I’ve done here is I said explicitly what type of source it is notice I just didn’t say this is a book more specifically this is an anthology of poetry okay and clarify that it did not have anything else it was just the poems then I also included a line about why this paper or why this book would be good for me okay so I specifically said exactly what it is not just that it is a book next one Ralph D gray was the compiler and editor of Indiana history a book of readings published in Bloomington by Indiana University Press in 1994 this is a collection of essays again being specific about what type of source it is all right you can pause this video at any time and stop and read each one of these individually I’m not going to read all of them to you next one Haven Kimmel wrote a girl named zippy growing up small in Moreland Indiana published in New York Broadway publishers 2001 this is a memoir memoir you notice I kind of give a little bit of an extra space between each one of these before going on to my next one EC roberts wrote english indiana it was compiled by nick roberts published in bloomington indiana university press in 1991 this is a collection of oral stories this next one is a little bit more complicated oh sorry gosh sorry sorry sorry um can’t see right in wrote the essay writing the midwest history literature and regional identity this is an academic journal that appeared in geographical review volume 89 issue 4 published in 1919 99 on pages 5 11 to 532 i found this on the database JSTOR and I included the most recent access information that I found it on the 5th of November 2016 and I included the link because now links are back in with MLA access dates are optional I find them to be helpful myself as a writer so I include them in there but MLA no longer requires you to have the access but they do require you to include your links notice that my PDF here is sensing that this is a URL but notice how this is not blue underlined hyperlink whether you are doing Microsoft Word or Google Docs you can easily right click and remove hyperlinks so I said here this is an academic journal essay all right so a couple little notes here that I want to make sure we go over that you complete a citation for each source and be sure that you type it using a hanging indent underneath each one of the citations describe what type of source you have read and give a brief summary of its content and include the depth of content and how valuable it could be in the research really think about whether or not using the source is going to be worth your time because let me tell you doing this now saves you a step later when you sit down to actually do your research and you realize out of your five sources only two of them are worth your while that’s very very frustrating okay be sure as well to list them in alphabetical order you want to list them in alphabetical order by the first entry articles do not count so going backwards we have our are your ohm K gray and articles don’t count C so I hope that this helps you understand exactly what an annotated bibliography is if you have any questions you guys know where to find me Thanks
